In her long career in local and federal politics, California Senator Dianne Feinstein, a liberal activist and moderate Democrat, helped remove barriers for women. She has now died away. Dianne Feinstein was elected to the Senate in 1992 and fought for liberal ideals. a 90-year-old.

“in Washington, D.C., at her house, Dianne Feinstein passed away on Thursday night,” according to her staff. All day long, tributes flooded in. We lost a giant in the Senate, said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer as he welcomed senators to the chamber.

Schumer said, “We know how many lives she touched and how many glass ceilings she cracked along the way,” as the nation mourns her untimely departure.

With over a year left in Feinstein’s term, Gov. Gavin Newsom is now required to appoint a replacement, a scenario he dismissed as hypothetical only weeks ago. This is a risky proposition because a competition to succeed Feinstein has already been going on for months.

This morning, a governor’s spokesperson said that his administration was still in the dark regarding Newsom’s plans and the timing of his appointment. He hailed Feinstein, another Democrat, in a statement as “a leader in times of tragedy and chaos.”

Dianne Feinstein already announced she will not run for re-election in 2024, igniting a heated contest to name her successor. Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California, has been dreading having to make this decision, but now that she has died away, he must choose a replacement to serve out the remaining term.

With prominent Democratic Reps. Barbara Lee, Katie Porter, and Adam Schiff facing off against one another before an all-party primary in March, California’s highly publicized Senate race might be derailed by a shift in leadership.

Feinstein was described as “a pioneering American,” “a true trailblazer,” and a “cherished friend” by President Joe Biden, who worked with her for years in the Senate.

The senior senator from the United States, Feinstein, fervently supported liberal causes, particularly those affecting her home state, such as abortion rights, gun control, and environmental protection. However, she was also regarded as a practical legislator who was willing to work with Republicans and find common ground.

This will be Newsom’s second appointment to the US Senate, after then-Sen. Kamala Harris was chosen vice president, he nominated close buddy Alex Padilla to be California’s first Latino senator in December 2020. Padilla was elected to a full six-year term in 2017.

Some activists were furious with the pick, pointing out that Newsom’s selection had once again left the Senate devoid of a Black woman. Months later, he promised that if Dianne Feinstein did not serve out her term, he would name a Black woman to fill her position on MSNBC.

In order for Democrats to have a second vote to pass budget bills, pressure may be put on Newsom to select a replacement immediately due to the possibility of a government shutdown.

A representative for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., confirmed that the senator and Newsom spoke on Friday. As the Senate waited for Newsom to fill the vacancy that gave Democrats a 50-49 majority, the call was made.

She suffered from shingles earlier this year, which rendered her incapacitated for more than two months before her death. Her absence infuriated her most ardent critics on the left, and it led to a failed Democratic move to replace her on the Senate Judiciary Committee for the time being. When she returned to the Senate in May, she was unwell and used a wheelchair, and she rarely participated in voting.

On Friday, a black cloth covered her Senate desk, which had a bouquet of white roses on top. Senators gave her an emotional tribute while her daughter Katherine Feinstein sat in the audience and the California House delegation stood in the back of the chamber.

In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” earlier this month, the governor stated that he would choose an interim senator if necessary because even though he had a Black woman in his sights, he did not “desire to participate in the primary. ”

Rep. Barbara Lee, a Democrat from Oakland who is competing for Feinstein’s seat and is trailing Reps. Adam Schiff, a Democrat from Burbank, and Katie Porter, a Democrat from Irvine in the public polls for the March primary, were incensed by his response. As one of California’s most prominent Black female lawmakers, Lee has been cast by her allies as the obvious choice for a vacancy.
