The Chicago Bears confirmed on Wednesday that defensive coordinator Alan Williams has resigned his position.
“It is with great regret that I tender my resignation as the defensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears Football Club, effective immediately,” Williams said in a statement.– Ian Rapoport, an NFL Network insider.
Williams had been absent from the squad for a personal reason and said in a brief statement that he would be “taking a step back to take care of my family and health.”
Williams stated in a statement, “I appreciate the chance to work with the Chicago Bears, a historic NFL team with a rich history.
After working the opening game against the Green Bay Packers and joining the Bears as a DC in 2022, Williams missed last week’s game at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Earlier on Wednesday, Eberflus would not confirm whether Williams was still a team employee.
The Bears rejected claims that a federal search had taken place inside the team’s Halas Hall facility in relation to Alan Williams. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Networks, neither the league nor Charles Tillman, a former defensive back for the Bears who is now an FBI agent, are involved.
Williams’ lawyer likewise refuted the claims, stating that Williams is coping with both family and health concerns.
Williams continued, “I appreciate the NFL shield and everything it represents, and after taking some time to take care of my health, I hope to come back and coach again.
Due to a “personal matter,” Williams, 53, has not been with the Bears since last week,” according to the team. Williams’ disappearance has been shrouded in mystery, even after the team announced his resignation in a one-sentence statement on Wednesday.
Eberflus Statements On Alan Williams
At the time, Eberflus stated, “I don’t have any updates at this moment.”
Eberflus, a former defensive coordinator with Indianapolis, called plays against the Buccaneers and will do so “at this time” when Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs visit the Bears (0-2) on Sunday.
“Andre Curtis, our safety coach, and Jon Hoke, our coordinator for the passing game, are both very experienced,” according to Eberflus. “Guys that were previously in our system. David Borgonzi, assistant defensive backs coach, and Dave Borgonzi, linebackers coach We’re set and ready to go, Overstreet, since all those guys are working hard.”
Due to the expertise of his staff, Eberflus claimed that the Bears can function without a defensive coordinator and doesn’t see an issue developing.
Williams has been a head coach in the NFL since the 2001 campaign. Prior to taking a job with the Bears, he was the defensive backs coach for the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 21.
In 2012 and 2013, Williams served as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. He has been a coach for more than three decades.
On the surface, it might appear harmless. Football coaches are real people with real personal lives outside of the game, just like football players. To deal with issues in their personal life, they occasionally need to put football on the back burner.
However, since the Bears won’t confirm if Williams is still the team’s defensive coordinator, things seem different in this instance.
The Bears were slightly more aggressive in their pressure on the quarterback when Eberflus was in charge of calling the plays. The Buccaneers were limited to seven points in the second half, which was one improvement. Some things did, like the inability to leave the field on third down, but not others.
Eberflus will call the defense once more if Williams does not join the team before this Sunday’s game against the Chiefs.
