On Thursday, actor Michael Gambon, especially known for playing Albus Dumbledore in the famous Harry Potter movies, died at the age of 82 due to a pneumonia infection. A post was shared on behalf of his family.

“We were heartbroken to announce Sir Michael Gambon’s death,” said publicist Clair Dobbs on behalf of his wife, Anne, and son Fergus. It went on to say that he “died calmly in the hospital” after contracting pneumonia with the couple by his side.

Michael Gambon, who was born in Dublin on October 19, 1940, to a seamstress mother and an engineer father, dropped out of school at the age of 15, seven years after graduating as an engineer after completing his apprenticeship.

Gambon was well-known for his broad body of work in television, film, and radio, with one of his most notable appearances as the psoriasis-ridden sleuth in the 1980s popular series “The Singing Detective.”

He was raised in Camden, England, in an Irish immigrant community, and his first work was as a trainee toolmaker. He developed a lifelong interest in vintage firearms, clocks, and classic autos.

“I’ve been raised as an obsessed collector,” Michael Gambon told a Guardian reporter in 2004. “Richard Briers collects stamps. Gambon trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art while working as a toolmaker and made his professional theatrical debut in “Othello” (1962) at Dublin’s Gate House.

Laurence Olivier, the actor, noticed him and invited him to work for the newly founded National Theatre Company. Four years later, Gambon entered the Birmingham Repertory Company, where he finally got to portray the title roles in his favorite Shakespeare dramas.

Gambon rose to prominence in the 1980s as the protagonist character Philip Marlow in the Anglo-American public television series “The Singing Detective.”

In 2010, he was considered for an Emmy for his performance as Mr. Woodhouse in an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, and in 2002, he was honored for his role as President Lyndon B. Johnson in Path to War. He was also nominated for a Tony Award in 1997 for his performance in David Hare’s play Skylight.

In 1998, he was knighted for his contributions to the entertainment business. He was born in Ireland but became a British citizen as a child.

The actor, better known as “The Great Gambon” in the industry, was last seen on stage in a London production of Samuel Beckett’s play All That Fall in 2012.

Ryan Phillippe, an American actor, stated he felt “so lucky” to have worked with Sir Michael at Gosford Park. Sir Michael was in his 60s at the time, and he was only 25, but they “got along like schoolmates because of his irrepressibly young spirit,” he remembered.
